ADULT-GERONTOLOGY CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST

The MSN in Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist (AG-CNS) prepares nurses to care for adult and geriatric populations (age 8 years - death) in increasingly complex healthcare settings in the Military Health System (MHS). AGCNS graduates are prepared to work in diverse settings to include traditional stateside military treatment facilities (MTF), as well as austere/under-resourced settings like humanitarian and operational missions. While enrolled in the program special emphasis is placed on understanding MHS processes and structures to improve outcomes, enhance evidence-based care, and improve the business of healthcare at the individual MTF-level. Across the program, students assess systems and processes preparing them to assume active roles as a member of the healthcare team to optimize health system performance in support of the MHS Quadruple Aims of better care, better health, lower cost, and improved readiness.

Beyond the Classroom

MSN students partner with their DNP colleagues through the entire process of problem identification, literature review discovering the evidence validating the problem, exploration of evidence supporting a plan of action to resolve the issue, identification of analytical methods to measure outcome success, and finally the development of a formal proposal submitted for IRB/PI approval.

Student Research

Military readiness is the top priority of USU with many different field experiences carefully created to insure students are prepared for any scenario they may find themselves in throughout their military career from medical dive courses in the Keys to mountain medicine courses in Vermont.

Field Exercises

Operation Bushmaster, a Military Contingency Medicine course capstone exercise, is a  multiple-day continuous medical field practicum where soon-to-be military health care providers put their knowledge to the test in a variety of complex scenarios that could occur on a battlefield, preparing them for any challenging environment.
