Lieutenant Colonel R. Kyle Hodgen is an Assistant Professor in the Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing (GSN) and Nurse Anesthesia Program. As the Director, Nurse Anesthesia Clinical Training Site at Wright-Patterson Medical Center, he is responsible for Phase II clinical training, education, and development of Air Force Nurse Anesthesia DNP students in the Dayton, Ohio area. He is also the newly appointed Nurse Anesthesia Consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General and former Air Force Director of Nurse Anesthesia Education.
As an Advanced Practice Registered (APRN) nurse educator, Lt Col Hodgen previously served as a full-time GSN faculty member from May 2012 to May 2016. While at USU, Lt Col Hodgen was a course and co-course coordinator for multiple core and anesthesia specialty courses, responsible for developing, implementing, and teaching didactic course curriculum and content to students across all specialty APRN tracts. Also while at USU, Lt Col Hodgen served as the first Air Force GSN All Faculty President and President Pro Temp from 2004 to 2006.
Lt Col Hodgen began his nursing career as an adult critical and cardiothoracic care nurse in the civilian community at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. He received his Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree from UAB, Birmingham, AL in 1996, and his first Masters of Science in Nursing degree as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner from the University of Southern Indiana and began his APRN career working for Ohio Valley HeartCare as a cardiology and cardiothoracic surgical physician extender for 3 years prior to joining the US Air Force in September of 2001.
Lt Col Hodgen started his active duty military career in the US Army as mechanized infantryman from 1990 to 1992, serving during the first Gulf War. He finished his US Army initial enlistment in the Florida Army National Guard in 1998. He launched his current US Air Force career commissioned as a First Lieutenant in 2001, stationed as a cardiothoracic intensive care nurse and APRN at Keesler Medical Center, KAFB, MS. He attended USU for his second Masters of Science in Nursing degree in Nurse Anesthesia in 2005 and began his nurse anesthesia career at Eglin Hospital, EAFB, Fl. He has deployed as a Combat Search and Rescue Team and Critical Care Air Transport Team member to Turkey and Iraq, and as a CRNA to Afghanistan, with his most recent deployment as a Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force (CJSOTF) XIII team member in Bagram and Tarin Kowt. Lt Col Hodgen received his Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree with an emphasis in education from UAB in 2013.
Major military awards include the Bronze Star, Joint Defense Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation medals, and multiple other Army and Air Force Achievement Medals. Lt Col Hodgen has been a member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) since 2007. He is also a member of the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society and numerous other academic honor societies.
Lt Col Hodgen has been married to his wife Sara for 24 years. They have 3 children: Jordan, Kylee, and Mary. He enjoys spending as much time as possible outdoors, working on vehicles, and hiking and camping with his family.
