Biography

Commander Lauren Suszan is Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and an Assistant Professor with the Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD. CDR Suszan serves as the Director of the Registered Nurse Anesthesia Program. CDR Suszan also serves as a reviewer for the International Student Journal of Nurse Anesthetists and is involved as a guest lecturer at civilian nurse anesthesia programs.

CDR Suszan began her nursing career as a pediatric trauma nurse in Dayton, Ohio before deciding to commission in the United States Navy Nurse Corps in May 2007. CDR Suszan started her Navy Nursing career at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, California. She gained invaluable naval and nursing knowledge at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton where she worked as a postpartum nurse, emergency medicine nurse, and clinic manager for primary and specialty care clinics. She also deployed with the United States Marine Corps, 1st Medical Battalion, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to Al Taqqadum, Iraq as a trauma and enroute care nurse. CDR Suszan applied to and was selected for Duty Under Instruction to attend USU as a student in the registered nurse anesthetist program. She completed Phase II of her anesthesia training at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. After graduating, CDR Suszan continued as a staff CRNA at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. CDR Suszan’s next assignment was Naval Medical Center San Diego, California where she served on the procedural sedation committee and as the division officer for obstetrical anesthesia. While stationed in San Diego, CDR Suszan completed her Doctorate of Nursing Practice which led to her selection as the Assistant Site Director of Clinical Training at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia. CDR Suszan then transitioned to the Site Director position at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia and also served as the Director of Clinical Simulation. In June 2020, LCDR Suszan assumed the role of the Nurse Anesthesia Program's Director for Clinical Education at USUHS, Bethesda, Maryland. CDR Suszan assumed her current role as the Director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program in March 2023.
