Biography

Dr. Matthew D’Angelo is Assistant Dean for Evaluation and Interprofessional Education at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing. Dr. D’Angelo has more than 25 years of experience with the U.S. Army Reserve. He enlisted in the Army in 1992 and served as an infantryman. During this time, D’Angelo completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr. D’Angelo began his nursing career as a pediatric critical care nurse at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1999. Dr. D’Angelo continued his education and earned a Master of Science from Georgetown University in 2001. He became a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in 2002 and maintains clinical practice at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. In 2008, Dr. D’Angelo completed a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree with an emphasis in fluid resuscitation from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. He currently has funded research evaluating methods to quantify intravascular volume and its utilization in perioperative fluid administration. Dr. D’Angelo serves as a Subject Matter Expert for the development, curriculum design and fielding of the expeditionary resuscitation surgical team (ERST), a novel austere mobile medical team designed to provide care in the special operations community. He is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Dr. D’Angelo has served as the Assistant Chief of Anesthesia Nursing for the 345th CSH in Iraq, is the Assistant Chief Nurse of the 80th Training Command (TASS) and is the sole anesthesia provider for Expeditionary Resuscitation Surgical Team - 5 assigned to Special Operations Task Force East Africa.
