Biography

Dr. Neal-Boylan is a professor of nursing in the PhD Program in the Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. She is a Family Nurse Practitioner who has worked in internal medicine, family practice, urgent care, and college student health. Most recently, she has cared for uninsured patients, mostly immigrants, in a primary care setting. She has maintained a clinical practice throughout her academic career. She is a Fellow in the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.
Dr. Neal-Boylan's has taught at the undergraduate level as well as at the masters and DNP levels teaching leadership and advanced practice. She's taught PhD students and has served as a committee member and chair on numerous doctoral committees. She's taught in both public and private universities, mostly in person but also online. Dr. Neal-Boylan has served academe as faculty, program director, associate dean, and dean. After many years in academe, she returned to full time clinical practice caring for the uninsured. She returned to teaching in 2024.
Dr. Neal-Boylan's program of research has focused on the nursing workforce. She has studied the work life experiences of home health nurses, rehabilitation nurse and the rehabilitation clinical nurse specialists in home health care, the role of retired nurses, and nurses with disabilities. The latter has been her program of research for approximately 15 years. Her dissertation utilized grounded theory methodology to develop the first research-based theory of home health nursing. Dr. Neal-Boylan has been awarded the American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year award three times and several research and publication awards. She has been an associate journal editor and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and numerous academic books.
Her current research interest involves immigrant patients.
