Biography

Michelle Binder is a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) in the United States Air Force. After completing her Bachelor’s degree in International Studies followed by several years in the civilian corporate sector, a major life change led her to pursue a Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) through the Clinical Nurse Leader program at the University of Toledo. After completing her MSN, she joined the Air Force in 2011 as a Registered Nurse. As an RN, her assignments included an inpatient medical-surgical unit, an outpatient Flight Medicine clinic, and a deployment to Kyrgyzstan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Recognizing her true calling to work in Mental Health, she was selected by the Air Force and Uniformed Services University (USU) for their PMHNP program and completed her doctoral degree (DNP) in 2019.

Dr. Binder’s initial assignment as a PMHNP was at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington D.C., where she was the sole psychiatric prescriber and Officer in Charge (OIC) of their substance abuse treatment program. The Air Force then called her to serve in Japan for 2 years, where she was both a prescriber and Medical Director for the Mental Health Clinic at Yokota Air Base. After 5 years as a PMHNP working across two continents and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Binder was selected as an Assistant Professor for the PMHNP program at USU and was thrilled to return to the institution that helped her become the clinician and leader she is today.
